Coach Wedson Nyirenda (Wada) has managed to qualify the locally based Chipolopolo National soccer team to the 2018 CHAN Championship slated for Kenya. The Zambian side needing a draw of not more than 2 goals went to the break nil all, having missed clear cut chances that could have done and dusted the job.
During the second and last 45 minutes, it seemed like the match will end in a barren draw enough to send the Chipolopolo boys to Nairobi until on Hit Nkwazi Striker Justin Shonga made it one nil in the 80th minute but adding another two minutes later.
The tournament which is outside the FIFA calendar is said disadvantaged the South Africans through withdrawals of key players by the powerful Absa Super League sides. However, local soccer fans in Zambia believe that the Bafana Bafana side knew that their chances were slim after the first leg draw in East London(South Africa) and that the technical team was merely saving face.
Bafana Bafana Head Coach Baxter Stuart seems not to willing to provide guidance to his below par side instead sending his Assistant to lead the charges at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. The trip to Zambia has always proved to be difficult for the South Africans.
It ended 4-2 on aggregate in favour of Zambia who will be making a third appearance at the tournament specifically designed by CAF exposure for Local based players. It is this tournament that the emerging top clubs in Africa are using to tap talent though the tournament needs additional funding to attract serious competition.
Zambia had finished third at the inaugural tournament in Ivory Coast and was eliminated at the quarterfinals stage in Rwanda. Zambia so far has a 100% record of appearances at the CHAN but is yet to lift the winners trophy.
